In today's podcast, papermaker Akemi Martin speaks with Fortnight Managing Editor, Ian Campbell, about the evolving principles and practices of her work.
Akemi's work bridges a meticulous, 2,000-year-old craft with the conceptual present. Akemi monitors the internet to salvage rapidly-depleted vintage supplies. She also describes her journey from Los Angeles to New York to serve as Studio Manager at the papermaking studio Dieu Donné. While she was first "the beater maid" and "took out the trash," Akemi learned rapidly by working alongside celebrated contemporary artists. She discusses collaborative highlights, such as pulling astoundingly large sheets for Louise Bourgeois, and stretching fishnet body suits for E. V. Day.
Akemi's previous pieces for Fortnight include the video Making Paper; podcast A Pulp Family Tree; galleries Mistake Paper and Mistake Paper II; and text A Paper Lexicon. |
