In today's Fortnight podcast, young New York City firefighter Jovis Depognon chats with retired New Jersey fireman Brian McGorty. The two have an illuminating discussion on leadership, ethics and generational dynamics in the firehouse. They share humorous tales of pranks and initiation. They also exchange their personal takes on serious problems of racial and ethnic integration in the force. "It'd be fine if I was working as a stockbroker or in customer service," says Jovis. But what "hurts the most" for him is being discriminated against by those with whom he works side-by-side, in life-or-death scenarios. The two agree that while "change comes slow to the fire service," a strong effort must be made to promote firefighting service in minority communities. "The job that we do, the real beauty of it in my opinion is that when the alarm goes off," says McGorty, "we go. We don't ask what color they are, what religion, whether they're wealthy. We don't care." |
