The 1904 Olympics featured women's boxing as a display event. In the 1970s, women began to train seriously for the ring, and to fight. The fitness movements of the 1980s helped make boxing more accessible to women. Gender discrimination suits have since opened once-closed paths to women in boxing. Lawsuits have been brought against USA Boxing and the Golden Gloves Tournament by women suing to have the right to compete in amateur matches. In 1993, USA boxing sanctioned women's amateur boxing and the AIBA (International Amateur Boxing Association) did the same in 1994.
