In today's podcast, Pilot Ben Watsky speaks with Ian Campbell about the future of the airline industry, in the second part of a longer conversation on the topic. Part one can be found here. Ben discusses the issues that are very unique to the flying profession, such as air traffic. The flying times that are now a result of the dense airspace can be solved by new navigation technologies coming on line. But today, planes follow navigation routes that take them in "zig-zags across the sky", and end circling above airports awaiting a space to land. The airline companies themselves are pressed these days as well. Airline regulators and companies slightly deal with rising fuel costs, labor costs and new rules resulting from earlier accidents. According to Ben, without taking pilots and crews into consideration and making more lasting, drastic changes that increase the quality of work across the entire industry, the problems will remain unresolved. "It's kind of hard to see all the sides, especially when you are involved in one aspect or another," says Ben. As a young member of the industry, he will be dealing with these issues and more as commercial aviation moves forward . |
