Winston cites the following statement by English painter Francis Bacon (1909-1992) on his 1988 painting, "Jet of Water," as instructive in teaching him to abandon the "conscious and rational reasoning of why any form should be translated":
Well, I collected an enormous amount of paint, and I didn't really mix them, I put them all into a pot, and I had painted the background in, and I just threw the paint onto the canvas, as you can see; I threw on what I hoped to be a wave, and it didn't make a wave. But there were lots of things about it that I liked, and it wasn't going to be a wave; it looked more like a jet of water, so I turned it into a jet of water. —David Sylvester, "Interviews with Francis Bacon."
