In today's Fortnight podcast, we bring you inside the dance studio where collaborators Silas Riener and Rashaun Mitchell are having an intimate exchange during rehearsals for Rashaun's new choreography, Interface. We asked Silas and Rashaun to interview each other about the craft of dance, and their time training under master choreographer Merce Cunningham (1919-2009). It is a complex and moving exchange, captured by Fortnight in the sun-drenched Cunningham company studio. From bad habits to true breakthroughs, the two discuss their evolution as dancers under the guiding intelligence of an important teacher. It is a conversation that should resonate with all young creators. "It's always way too hard. On some level, you can never be bored. And if you are? Then you should probably stop dancing," says Rashaun about his late teacher's style. Part One of this podcast is a chat on the challenges of making new dance.
