For my final contribution to Fortnight, I would like to bring you as close to my work as possible by showing you excerpts from my scientific notebook in many stages of the experimental process and data acquisition.

Besides detailing the rote sequence of experimental events, the scientist’s notebook is a place to develop thoughts, ideas, and questions while seeking scientific truths. Science is a dynamic process; therefore, hypotheses can change swiftly and a record of this progress is critical.

Notes assure that exact procedures can be readily called upon and repeated (or disputed) with ease by current or future fellow researchers.

My laboratory notebooks throughout the years read like a patchwork quilt of information: Studies that have failed, studies that have been completed and the data to support them, and problems that have been overcome, all back-to-back.

This human record is part of the legacy I am leaving to future researchers who take my position next.
