- nicholas carter
nicholas carter was born in houston, texas. he received his ba in philosophy from our lady of the lake university in san antonio. he then attended the university of texas in austin where he earned an ma in latin american studies, specializing in the study of the mayan civilization. there he studied with dr. david stuart. currently, he is a phd candidate in archaeology at brown university, where he studies under dr. stephen houston. nicholas writes, "writing for fortnight gave me a chance to research some topics that interest me, but that aren't necessarily directly connected to my dissertation work. just as importantly, condensing the information i found into essays suitable for online publication forced me to think about what was crucial and to winnow out everything else--something i'll be doing daily when, with any luck, i'm teaching at a university. for the foreseeable future, my time will be taken up with writing: mainly chapters for my dissertation, on class dynamics during the terminal classic period (a.d. 830-1000), but also chapters for books on el zotz and other aspects of ancient maya history."
